Installing a Wood Burning Stove

Disclaimer: this is a guide and is not a definitive source of legal information.

We would always recommend you employ a suitably qualified HETAS installer for any wood or multi-fuel stove installations. Your installer is your reference point for the correct output, physical size, and suitable location of your stove. They also have the correct tools and knowledge required to carry out the required tests to confirm the suitablity of your flue and installation. The installer would also be who you turn to should you have any servicing requirements or any issues with your stove, as almost all stove issues are caused by problems with the flue draw and air flow.

If you choose to install a wood burning or multi fuel stove yourself, you will need to ensure you have met all the rules, regulations and requirements necessary to satisfy the law, set out (in great detail) in Document J of the Building Regulations. You will then need to seek approval from the local Building Regulations Authority within 28 days of completion of the installation.

Be aware that if you install a stove yourself and do not have the installation professionally signed signed off, your house insurance would become invalid in the event of a claim linked to the illegal installation.

Furthermore, If you install a stove yourself, and you DO get the installation signed off by the local Building Regulations Authority, if you have not met the criteria set out in the stove manufacturers warranty terms (flue draught reading, smoke test etc.) Any warranty implied by the manufacturer for their stove would be void.

If you choose to employ an approved HETAS installer to carry out the installation, their qualification allows them to self-certify the work - thus avoiding the need to seek approval from the local Building Regulation Authority.
